About Mrs. Barbas’s Class

Thanks for visiting our weblog! We are a classroom community, learning to work together and working to learn together.
First, a little info about me (Mrs. Barbas). I graduated from the University of Delaware in 1999. I taught third grade for five years and first grade for one year at Thomson Estates Elementary in Cecil County, Maryland. I began teaching second grade here at Pleasantville in December of 2005. My husband Michael and I live here in the Colonial district, so you may run into us at the grocery store or Walmart! We have two children: Hannah, who is in first grade at Pleasantville this year, and Sam, who is four.
In the classroom, we are using strategies of community-building called Responsive Classroom. We begin every day with a Morning Meeting, where we take time to greet each other, share news and announcements, and continue learning about our classmates. We have designated a spot in the classroom for students to use when they need some time to relax and regain their self-control. We worked to establish rules that will take care of ourselves, each other and our classroom.
Hopefully, you have your copy of our Classroom Handbook. It explains most of the policies and procedures of our classroom. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. I look forward to helping each child have a successful second grade year.
